You want to stop smoking, so why does it not happen? The answer lies in the subconscious mind.
Willpower
Why is it that we can decide that we are going to stop smoking, but not make it happen? Why isn't it enough just to decide that we don't want to smoke anymore? Why can't we just say, "I'm going to stop smoking", and then it happens automatically?
Subconscious mind
Part of the answer lies in our subconscious mind; that part of our brain that deals with skills and habits, memories and emotions. If we have a subconscious need to carry on smoking, it can make it very difficult for us to stop.
Smoking works back to front
Another part of the answer lies in the fact that smoking works back to front. With most things we choose to do, we do it because we like doing it. However, with smoking, part of the reason we do it is because we don't like what happens if we don't do it — in other words, we don't like not doing it.
Giving up smoking is not a positive goal
Yet another reason why it's so difficult is because "giving up smoking" is not a positive goal — we tend to think in terms of the absence of smoking, not the achievement of something positive (such as better health, whiter teeth, better complexion, sweeter smell, a greater disposable income, setting a good example to the children, etc.).
Whatever you think about grows
Finally, there is that word "smoking". It is a fact that whatever you think about grows — try this little experiment: there are two phrases immediately below. Say the first phrase at least six times, preferably out loud (although in your head will do). Notice how you feel. Then say the second phrase six times. Again, notice how you feel.
- I am nervous and irritable
- I am relaxed and serene
Did you notice that just saying that you were nervous and irritable made you feel nervous and irritable, and just saying that you were relaxed and serene made you feel relaxed and serene? Odd isn't it?
The implication for people giving up smoking is this: if you think about smoking (or even try not to think about smoking) when trying to give it up, you are making life a lot more difficult for yourself.
